Ballet Hop! NDG is a ballet and fitness studio offering body-positive ballet classes and ballet-inspired workouts for adults. The studio provides services including workshops, children’s classes, specialty camps, studio rentals, and celebratory events. Ballet Hop! NDG focuses on creating a welcoming environment for individuals of all ages and body types. Located in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG) at 5674 Sherbrooke Street Ouest, the studio is part of a franchise with several locations in Montreal. We got to speak with Kate Doucet, the owner of Ballet Hop! NDG, to find out more about them.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Ballet Hop! NDG. We are a ballet and fitness studio offering body-positive ballet classes and ballet-inspired workouts to adults. We also offer workshops, parties and studio rentals, children’s classes and camp weeks.
What made you want to do this work?
I have been in the dance, performance and teaching industry for over 15+ years. Inspiring others to step into the world of dance (ballet in particular) is a very rewarding thing, but to open a place that does this in a positive, inclusive and accepting way changes the perception of ballet for the better and makes it accessible to everyone. This is why I do what I do.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
I want to eliminate the stereotypes associated with ballet and ensure everyone finds a place where they can dance for joy in a positive environment. Body shape, age, should not matter.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
We are lucky to welcome people of all ages. We offer childrens classes from the age of 18 months up, adult classes, and we also have a special program for new mamas who need to work on rehabilitation after giving birth. We are located in NDG and welcome anyone who wants to join us!
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We sell classes, memberships, workshops, kids camps and we also have a small boutique.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
While Ballet Hop is a franchise (you can find another 4 studio locations around Montreal), our studio is located in NDG at 5674 Sherbrooke street Ouest.
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services?
Do you have a class suitable for me (my age, level)?
The answer would be yes. No matter what age or level you are at, we offer classes that take you all the way from an absolute beginner to pro. And depending on what exactly you are looking for (whether it is real ballet, or ballet inspired fitness) we have a wonderful schedule that is sure to fulfill your needs!
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part – Seeing someone enjoy ballet and have what I like to call ‘lightbulb moments’ – where something that once seemed difficult becomes clearer after good explanation and practice and you just ‘get it!’. Also the community – I love my clients! The worst part… hmmm… I am lucky enough to enjoy my work, it’s actually hard to pinpoint a ‘worst part’… Maybe not having enough hours in the day to do it all! I am a solo owner and manager and I do everything from teaching, to scheduling, accounting to marketing – so time is a little tight!
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
Ballet dancer – “I worked really hard on my frappé today” – Non dancer ‘thinks I mean coffee drink’…
