Bois Magique is a lovingly and thoughtfully put together furniture exhibition which showcases the works of emerging creators at the intersection of craft, art and design for a broad audience. We spoke with founder and co-curator Rafaël Khoury to find out more about the transcendental work that they do.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Bois Magique is dedicated to showcasing the work of underrepresented furniture makers and designers. We organize a biannual furniture exposition of pieces by emerging creatives. We also provide professional photography services for early-career folks who may not have the network or resources to document their work.
We believe in celebrating and elevating the talents of people of all ages, from all backgrounds. Through innovation, diversity, and community-driven craft, we drive a cultural shift towards accessibility, sustainability, and creativity.
What made you want to do this work?
This idea originated two years ago in Toronto after attending the International Design Show (IDS) and feeling mostly underwhelmed by what I saw. Seeing the submissions for our inaugural show last month trickle in affirmed the thought I had back then– that Montreal’s ever-growing community of builders and designers deserves a showcase of its own
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
Bois Magique is meant to help emerging creatives break through the barriers of access in the fields of art, design, and woodworking. We provide a platform that transcends traditional exhibition spaces, empowering artists, craftsfolk, and designers to share their visions with a broader audience.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
Anyone working within and around the fields of design, sculpture or furniture making, and anyone who wants to support them.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
Bois Magique is currently entirely self-funded. Our first Expo which took place on July 27th implemented a PWYC (Pay What You Can) model. We hope to apply for business grants in the near future.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
Our office is located at 2177 rue Masson unit 415 in the east plateau in Montreal.
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
Why not simply run an Art Gallery or a Trade show?
Bois Magique operates differently than conventional exposition models. We prioritize community building over commercial potential.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
Best – Being able to share space and resources with so many different kinds of people and being fortunate enough to learn from them in return.
Worst – Need to have my efforts and attention be on multiple things at once because organising community-focused projects requires to work overtime in order to be funded.
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?
Too many to list! So many great businesses in this city. We LOVE Zamalek, who produce amazing drinks. Banh Mi Banh Yiu as well for their amazing sandwiches. I’d like to thank both of them for supporting our expo last month. Community Service Magazine and The Page are two emerging local publications that promote many arts and culture events in the city. Lastly Jardin Papillion for lending us their space for our inaugural event.
