Homegrown Business: Brianna Harris for The Bee’s Kitchen

The Bee’s Kitchen is a Black-owned business which helps Montrealers and West Islanders with all of their catering needs. With a sweet and savoury approach, their menu ranges from desserts like vegan cookies and main dishes such as cajun pasta, salads, and soul food like chicken and mac ‘n’ cheese. We spoke with founder Brianna Harris to learn more about what they do to cater for peoples’ events and special get-togethers.

The Bee’s Kitchen

What is your business called and what does it do?

The Bee’s Kitchen is a Black-owned, home-style catering business based in the West Island. We specialize in a variety of cookie flavours and offer catering services for events.

What made you want to do this work?

Since I was a child, I’ve always had a passion for food. Being in the kitchen has always been therapeutic for me, and as a biochemistry student, I’ve come to appreciate the chemistry behind cooking. Starting this business allowed me to combine my love for food with my knowledge of science, turning my passion into something that not only fulfils me but also helps others.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

I wanted to solve the problem of finding high-quality, personalized food options for special events. Many people struggle to find catering services that offer both great taste and customization. Whether it’s accommodating dietary restrictions, specific themes, or simply offering a more personal touch, I wanted to create a service that tailors every detail to the client’s preferences, ensuring that every celebration or gathering has food that truly complements the occasion.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Our clientele mainly consists of busy professionals and young adults with a sweet tooth, or those seeking catering services for their events. We cater to individuals looking for convenience and high-quality food.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

We generate revenue by selling products directly and providing catering services. Customers can place orders or inquire about catering via Instagram, Facebook, or email.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

We are located in Montreal, specifically in the West Island, but we also offer delivery services.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

A great question would be, “What sets your business apart from others?” The answer is simple: The Bee’s Kitchen offers unique, personalized food that’s tailored to your tastes. We focus on quality and customizability, making us stand out from other catering services.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part is seeing our clients’ reactions when they receive their order, and watching them return as loyal customers. On the flip side, the worst part is the long hours, as I work alone. But I’m passionate enough to push through and make it work.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

Why did the caterer become a great comedian? Because they always knew how to deliver the perfect punchline… and plate!
