Tragedy Plus Time: Montréal Comedian Hash the 1

Montreal comedian Hash the 1 is forging a style all his own, blending progressive ideas with a proudly dirty edge as he continues to shape his comedic voice. Influenced as much by pro wrestling showmanship as stand-up legends, his material reflects a life that’s shifted dramatically in recent years—from near-death experiences to becoming the uncle who wants to change the world. Now heading into 2026, Hash brings a mix of honesty, mischief, and meaning to the stage.

How would you describe your comedy style?

As of now, even after 6 years, I feel I am still trying to find my voice, but as of right now, I feel like it’s progressive but dirty comedy. When I started … like every open micers, it was the dirty jokes and yelling “WHORE” and all sorts of shit, since my last interview with the Guardian, I had a life-threatening experience and saw my nieces and nephew grow even taller than me. Things are just different for me in 2025 going into 2026, so for me to call myself a comedian and also a uncle and a person who wants to change the world my own way, making smart progressive but funny jokes is the way for now.

Who are some of your influences?

As someone who does comedy and works in pro-wrestling, I watch alot of WWE and AEW, learning from the best of both companies, when someone is over with the crowd and they take their sweet time before talking, they handle hecklers but in a way bigger stage (16k people in general) the maneurism, the showmanship, the best one was The Undertaker, always stayed in character during is career and kept is name up with some of the best

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

I didn’t really have a favourite comedians growing up; I wasn’t into comedy.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

I always like to watch Bill burr, always a good choice

What is your pre-show ritual?

I usually listen to songs for 20-30 minutes before going to the show. I used to smoke a joint before, but now I do it less and less

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

The best place I have performed yet, technically it isn’t stand-up but more pro-wrestling, it’s L’Olympia, I was Lil Phantom in the IWS show last holiday show. I loved it because the crowd was just so into it, and I feel like I did some to make people forget their problems.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

I love my TikTok bit because it is dirty, but also has a progressive twist to it

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Go to your local open mics, especially the (free/pay what you can) you see great comedians bomb, shitty comedians do great, all sort of people still trying to find their voice, some hate it but I secretly love going and see which comedians is getting better, sometime they change 1 line in a joke and you see in their eyes they were risking it and it worked!

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

First of all, I won’t say names that already made it because they don’t need my acknowledgement, instead I’ll rephrase your question and give you the comedians that, in my opinion, are underrated or newer (to watch) in the English comedy scene.

1. Samson Cooperman: very underrated comedian, I like doing a show with him because the mix of both of our sets gives a name vibe to the show.

2. Peter Bowen: You’ve seen him everywhere, and he has been grinding every show wherever he can, getting better. I am truly blessed seeing him improve every week.
