“A Day in the Life” with: Artist Carter Gulseth

Carter Gulseth is an actor, writer, and director extraordinaire who recently graduated from the National Theatre School’s 2025 acting class. Past credits include playing primarily loud and ridiculous men such as King Lear in Shakespeare’s Women, The Mayor in The Government Inspector, and The Director in the NTS creation project Deadline—a play which he also wrote and assistant-directed. Carter is inspired by bold, plot-driven stories that tackle nuanced characters and controversial subject matter. He is excited to direct and also act in Lay Down All Dogs, in which he will, for once, play a very serious man who speaks at a reasonable volume.

When Carter is not at the theatre, he can be found in his apartment. He loves his apartment so much. It’s where all his stuff is. You may catch a glimpse of him from the window, sipping tea and writing. It is very rare, however, to see him eating—a circumstance which (along with his casual use of Victorian dialect) has contributed to widespread speculation that he may actually be a ghost from the past. Carter adamantly denies these rumours.

Which ’hood are you in?

The Plateau, where I also rehearsed the last reading of Sarah Danielle Pitman’s exciting new play, Lay Down All Dogs, performed at the Centaur on February 21st

What do you do?

On any given day? I rise, I have a smoothie, I spend four or five hours writing, I have a salad, and I go to bed. If I’m lucky, I have an audition, which gives me an excuse to put on my good pants. If I’m even luckier, I book an acting job, like the reading of Sarah Danielle Pitman’s thrilling new play Lay Down All Dogs at the Centaur.

What are you currently working on?

Besides this reading of the scintillating play Lay Down All Dogs by the almost frighteningly talented Sarah Danielle Pitman? Well, Sarah and I are writing a stage spoof based on a well known work of classic fiction as well as a holiday musical about the ghost of a famous crooner who convinces a lady not to end it all on Christmas Eve, and I personally am just about to enter year three of plugging away at a novel that will be simultaneously adored and reviled by pretentious lit majors for years to come.
