Madeleine Scovil is a bilingual actor, director, singer, and educator based in Montreal. She dedicates every free moment to honing her craft or helping others discover their own. An hour with Madeleine as your collaborator can be more productive and artistically expanding than a year by yourself. Whether you’re working with puppets, ballet, ukuleles, Shakespeare, motion capture, or a classroom of 6-year-olds, the focus, effort, and enthusiasm that Madeleine brings to every room is constant. Working and learning with her at the National Theatre School was such a gift. She brought integral elements to our ensemble; her serious play, her studious research, and her genuine care for those she collaborates with. Since graduating, Madeleine has taken Montreal by storm, seeking out every opportunity to connect with new work, established theatres, the Voice Over industry, as well as countless young, aspiring artists. I’m so grateful to have this powerhouse of an artist in our community.

Most of my days begin with tea and whichever mug feels right for that day. I’m a firm believer that every situation can be improved with the right tea and the right mug.When the weather allows it, I bike everywhere. I’ve loved getting to know Montreal through its bike lanes and the loveliness they lend to my daily commute.These bike rides usually take me to my different teaching jobs. I teach and direct theatre both independently and for a variety of established theatre schools in Montreal such as The Segal Academy, Montreal Children’s Theatre, Youth Theatre Canada and Royal West Academy…often at the same time. Since September, I’ve been directing 7 different children’s shows simultaneously. Juggling this with my performance schedule is challenging to say the least, but it all somehow creates a wonderful balance that I am undeterred from exploring.I also work with a puppet company called Meute Monde. We use combinations of movement, music and puppets made of recycled materials to tell stories. This work challenges me with its precision and often humbles me as a performer – I love it.When my schedule and my budget allow it, I try to expand and deepen my skill set through workshops and classes. This photo is from a video game motion capture workshop I completed this year. This work is somehow both ridiculous and serious and I hope it will become a bigger part of my day-to-day life.These days I spend most of my time working on Strawberries in January. It’s a musical going up at the beautiful Centaur Theatre in January. I’m so freakin’ excited to share this project with everyone!On longer breaks, I go to visit my mother’s farm. Walking around the back fields and woods with all her dogs is probably where I feel the most peaceful and happy.It’s harder to see them as much these days, but I cherish the opportunities for adventures out of the city with my friends. I’m lucky to have just moved into a beautiful, old Montreal apartment in Ville-Marie.
What do you do?
I’m primarily a theatre actor and an arts educator. I also dabble in video game acting, puppetry and directing.
What are you currently working on?
I’m playing the role of Sophie in the Centaur’s upcoming musical production of Strawberries in January. I’m really proud of it so far. I’m also directing two productions of the musical Tuck Everlasting with the Segal Centre Academy and rehearsing two puppet shows, Pile Up and Pierre et le loup, with Meute Monde. I’m lucky enough to also have a couple of video game voice-over recordings coming up!
