Charitable Choices: Westhaven-Elmhurst Community Recreation Association

For over five decades, Westhaven-Elmhurst Community Recreation Association (WECRA) has been a vital hub for children, youth, and families in Montréal’s Côte-des-Neiges–NDG borough. Founded in 1972, this registered charity offers inclusive, intergenerational programs—from homework help and summer camps to a teen-run music studio—designed to support local youth and strengthen community ties.

Rooted in a grassroots approach, Westhaven addresses the lack of accessible resources for vulnerable and underserved communities by providing safe, creative, and educational spaces. What began as a modest youth initiative has grown into a dynamic centre for recreation and belonging.

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences:

Westhaven–Elmhurst Community Recreation Association (WECRA) is a community centre and registered charity located in the Westhaven sector of Montréal’s Côte-des-Neiges–NDG borough. We offer inclusive, intergenerational programming that supports local children, youth and families—from homework support, to summer camps, and even a teen music studio.

What problem does it aim to solve?

Westhaven supports children and youth, including vulnerable and at-risk communities, by providing them with safe and creative, accessible activities as well as academic resources.

When did you start/join it?

Westhaven was founded in 1972 and has been serving the community for over 50 years.

What made you want to get involved?

As a volunteer, I was drawn to Westhaven’s mission of building stronger, more connected communities through accessible recreation and social inclusion. Its grassroots approach resonated with my values.

What was the situation like when you started?

Westhaven began as a modest initiative to provide youth programming in a neighbourhood lacking in public resources. It has since grown into a dynamic organization that serves residents and will continue to expand to provide tools and resources for children and youth to thrive.

How has it changed since?

Over the years, Westhaven has expanded its programming and responded to evolving community needs. Today, it offers a wide range of activities rooted in a strong spirit of local participation. We are also now a registered Canadian charity, so donors can make a tax-receiptable gift in support of Westhaven through Canada Helps.
