How would you describe your comedy style?
Observational comedy with a slightly neurotic Jewish perspective.
Who are some of your influences?
Who isn’t?
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Polkaroo from The Polka Dot Door’
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Joe List, Nick Mullen, and Robby Hoffman are the funniest people in the world to me.
What is your pre-show ritual?
I try to be mean to at least one staff member to remind myself of my superiority. Then I pace around and repeat in my head, “Hi, my name is Oren Shbiro,” over and over—even though I’ve never once started a set like that.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
Opening for Sugar Sammy at Théâtre Paradoxe in Ville-Émard was incredible—the place is gorgeous. But there was also a New Year’s Eve show at The Comedy Works on Bishop, before it burned down. The club had been struggling for a bit but was on the rise again, and that night it was packed.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
Every joke about my bubby. She was really important to me, and sharing her story through my comedy meant a lot. She loved to play this game: every time a new face appeared on the screen, she’d ask if I thought they were Jewish. That was the entire game. I’d say, “Bubby… for the third time… It’s Mitsumi Takahashi.”
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
YouTube and Punchup.live. But honestly, just go to live shows.
Do you have anything to promote right now?
Sunday, April 26 — I’ll be headlining The Comedy Nest, and the show will be recorded for my first album. Come be part of it.
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
Last night I was at a show, and André Raymond absolutely destroyed.
