Five Minutes With: Alt Pop-Rock Band Those Trees

Those Trees is an all-female alternative pop-rock band. The Montreal-based queer group stands out with its rich and melodic soundscapes, striking vocal harmonies, and electrifying performances. The singer-songwriters invite you into a world filled with duality: refined and raw, melancholic and impetuous.

Favourite musician growing up:

Anne-Marie: Placebo, The Cranberries, Tegan and Sara
Hazy: Paramore, Flyleaf, Avril Lavigne
Tamara: Our Lady Peace (fun fact: She opened for them in 2025 and they called her back on stage for a song with them!)
Jacinthe: Beatles, Green Day

Favourite musician now:

A-M: Sofia Isella
H: Meet Me @ The Altar
T: The National
J: Muse

Guilty pleasure song:

H: There’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure song. If you love a song, own it. You don’t have to feel bad for liking what you like.

Live show ritual:

A-M: Writing down the setlist multiple times in the morning, listening to the songs in order, drinking lots of water, making a tea that I’ll bring to the venue and never actually get to drink until after the show because it’s too hot, arriving early for soundcheck… make-up and glitter for everyone, and let’s go!

Favourite local musician:

We love supporting each other, so I’d say Dear Broken Silence, Hazy Oak, and Tamara Weber! Go check those bands out to find out which Tree plays in which! 😉 Beyond that, we’re big fans of Alanna Sterling!

EP or LP?

A-M: LP. I love listening to albums from beginning to end in one sitting. When songs from my teenage years come on, I can still hear the next track playing in my head. I also love creating full-length albums that represent different periods of my life.
H: EP. I get the appeal of a full-length album, but I have the attention span of a browser with 47 tabs open.

Early bird or night owl?

A-M: I’d be a night owl if it weren’t for my day job as an early childhood educator, starting at the crack of dawn! I’ve learned to enjoy mornings, but I’m definitely more efficient in the evening.
H, T and J: night owls

Road or studio?

A-M: I love being in the studio—working on new songs, trying things out, recording, and all that jazz. I find the road fun but exhausting! I do love playing shows, but I need a few business days to recover afterward.

Any shows or albums coming up?

We’ll be playing the first edition of a new music festival called 3F Festival Femmes Fatales at P’tit Ours in Montreal on Saturday, June 20. We’re also currently working on our third album.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

ChuChai. Best vegan food in Montreal!

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

A-M: Ontario. Hochelag’ represent! So many different vibes all at once. I love the diversity and chaos of that street—from wrestling to scooter and skate park competitions, dog shows, circus performances, live music, talent shows, and of course, La Pataterie.
H: Mont-Royal is a very good time when it’s pedestrian.

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

A-M: Parc Maisonneuve. In the summer, I love roller skating on the 3 km bike path. It’s a great loop, and it’s beautiful—you can almost forget you are in the city! Plus, the park has a sheepfold, and you can sometimes spot sheep wandering around. In the winter, I love going there for ice skating.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

Quai des Brumes! It’s legendary. We’ve played there so many times over the years and have so many great memories tied to that place. We love organizing 5 à 7s there every now and then. Early rock shows are always a win! We enjoy creating a space where people who can’t make it to late-night shows can still experience live music.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

H: Timpano Percussion. It’s basically a toy store.
