Tragedy Plus Time: Montreal-based Comedian Aseem Halbe

Aseem Halbe started his comedy career in Montreal a few years ago. His witty repertoire resonates with people of all ages. One of his side-splitting routines revolves around the parking signs of Montreal, leaving the crowd in stitches every time. Aseem’s ability to blend family-friendly jokes and universal humour makes him a true gem in the Montreal comedy scene.

How would you describe your comedy style?

My comedy is characterized by sharp observations in a matter-of-factly style of delivery. My jokes are about finding humour in routine things and my content is (usually) family-friendly.

Who are some of your influences?

I am inspired by Bill Burr, who keeps his content current and makes one think while at the same time being hilarious. Another influence is Sindhu Vee, her comedy is crisp and she delivers it to perfection.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

I was born and raised in India and stand-up comedy is not something I watched back then, I was only introduced to stand-up in my 20s while I was studying in the UK. My favourites during that period: Jimmy Carr and Danny Bhoy.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Anthony Jeselnik – his impeccable ‘joke writing’ manages to impress me each time.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Being a chatty person, I like to talk to fellow comics. I am the conversation starter in the green rooms (not sure how fellow comics feel about that).

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

The Comedy Nest in Montreal. In 2019, I did my first open mic there and never looked back! I have won their Wednesday Comedy Lab ‘Best Joke’ competition 12 times – just another reason for making this place special.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

I have a few I am proud of. Recently, I have been receiving a great response on a bit that I have been performing about Montreal’s parking signs. You can find it on my social media pages.

What is your favourite medium for listening to or finding new comics/comedians?

I do not watch a lot of stand-up on TV, streaming services etc. Thanks to the shows that I am on, I watch a lot of live comedy and it is incredible!

Tell us a joke about your city.

What is the similarity between Mumbai (my hometown in India) and Montreal (my new home)? Both these cities are pothole-capitals of their respective countries.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

Yes, you could watch the clips that I regularly post on social platforms. I am a regular at venues across the city, hope to see you in person!

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

Randy Komi is one of my favourites.
