“A Day in the Life” with: Montréal Visual Artist Rosalie Gamache

Born in Montreal in 1993, Rosalie Gamache is a passionate painter who combines technical rigour with contemporary sensitivity. Trained at Université Laval and the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, she also studied at the Florence Classical Art Academy, where she drew on the foundations of the Renaissance to deepen her understanding of the pictorial medium. A tireless worker, she has devoted the past several years to exploring the possibilities of painting and the ways it can play with the illusion of representation.

By approaching the human figure, still life, and landscape through a queer lens, Rosalie develops a singular visual language that revisits the codes of classical painting with a distinctly contemporary perspective. Through layering and transparency, she engages with current questions of identity, playing on the tension between opacity and translucency to create images that are both sensitive and conceptual—inviting viewers to reflect on what is revealed and what remains concealed.

Her work, both poetic and thoughtful, has been presented in Canada and Europe — notably at the Frauenmuseum in Bonn, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Florence Biennale, and Future Fair in New York.

Which ’hood are you in?

I live in Montreal, in the Little Italy neighbourhood. I moved back after eight years abroad — part of which I spent in Europe, in Italy and in France, and a few years in Quebec City, where I completed my bachelor’s degree in visual arts.

What do you do?

I’m fortunate to work full-time in my studio. I use traditional oil painting techniques to create works based on live models that I direct or on sculptures that I conceptualize. I’m developing several upcoming exhibition projects in Canada, Europe, and the United States.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently pursuing a new series of paintings titled Transparaître, in which translucent figures blend into dreamlike landscapes. In early fall 2025, I presented my recent works in my solo exhibition, The Illusion of Transparency, in Montreal, and I’m now preparing a new selection of landscapes that will be shown in Europe at Luxembourg Art Week in November 2025.

Where can we find your work?

You can follow the evolution of my work and projects on Instagram, Facebook, and on my website.

My original paintings are represented by Duran Contemporain Gallery in Montreal.

It is also possible to obtain the book Peindre la peinture, my first publication gathering works from recent years.
