Additionally, O’Pulence MTL introduced the “Fuel for Success” food and nutrition teaching program in schools. We spoke with founder Chef Marie J Modeste to learn more.
What is your business called and what does it do?
O’Pulence MTL Chef Services, specializing in weekly meals that range from basic to complex, and even gastronomic dishes. We also cater private small group & bigger event gatherings. Lately we also. launched a food and nutrition education program that caters to schools name “Fuel for Success”.
What made you want to do this work?
As I was transitioning from a finance career to becoming a cook, I knew I was not going to open a restaurant later on but surely wanted to help people in a meaningful way, either by educating them on what, where, and when to shop or creating a community that values thoughtful, wholesome eating. My aim was always to go beyond just providing a meal; I wanted to inspire people to connect with food on a deeper level, to understand the journey of what we consume, and to prioritize health and well-being in daily life.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
I wanted to address the challenge of eating well and staying healthy, especially for those with food intolerances, allergies, or chronic illnesses. My focus is on crafting meals that meet each client’s unique dietary needs while still being enjoyable and nutritious. I also aim to educate young people on the impact of what they consume, helping them understand how different foods interact with their bodies and shape their health.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
My clientele spans youth aged 5-16, young adults 17-19, and adults 20-60+, each with diverse dietary needs and goals.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We generate revenue through bookings made directly on our website or by phone, where clients can arrange customized chef services tailored to their needs. There have been many word-of-mouth bookings. Services are flexible to accommodate both one-time events and ongoing weekly meal support.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
How do you personalize your services to meet the unique dietary needs and preferences of each client?
Answer: I believe that every client is unique, and that’s why I take the time to understand their specific needs, preferences, and health goals before designing a menu. Whether it’s for specific dietary restrictions, cultural preferences, or fitness objectives, I create meals that are not only delicious but tailored to each person’s lifestyle. It’s important to me that my clients feel supported, nourished, and excited about what they’re eating every day.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part is definitely the flexibility that allows me to control my schedule and maintain a balance between my family life, personal activities, and work. Being able to spend quality time with my loved ones while also pursuing my passion as a chef is incredibly rewarding.
The worst part would have to be the unpredictability of the industry, especially around last-minute changes or cancellations when clients are ill which is totally understandable. While I love being adaptable, it can be challenging to navigate sudden shifts without disrupting my schedule and plans.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
That’s a great question! Honestly, I can’t think of a specific joke about my profession. What I can say is that working your way up in this field is no joke—it’s incredibly challenging and requires years of hard work. But if you find your niche, hold onto it tightly. Set clear goals, seek help when you need it, and keep pushing forward until you achieve them.
