Tragedy Plus Time: Comedian André Raymond

André Raymond’s comedy is exactly what he calls it: “inside thoughts, but out loud.” With a sharp, conversational style influenced by Dylan Moran and Gary Gulman—and sparked early on by Richard Jeni—he delivers honest, relatable material that hits across generations. A regular at Montréal’s Comedy Nest and a driving force behind Comedy Cave MTL, Raymond has built a reputation for connecting with any crowd by turning everyday observations into something unforgettable.

André Raymond

How would you describe your comedy style?

Inside thoughts but out loud.

Who are some of your influences?

Dylan Moran, Gary Gulman, Martin Matte, Mike Ward,

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

Richard Jeni is the reason I got into this racket hands down. There’s bit that still make me cry laughing to this day, 30-some odd years later.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Dan Soder is pretty amazing. Shane Gillis and Kurt Metzger to round out a top 3.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Usually, watching the room fill up. Try and catch the vibe of the collective of folks who came out to watch. In an ideal world, I have the glow of a 2 beer buzz before going up to lubricate the anxieties.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

Lac Frontière. Tiny town of like 200 people. We played at this church/event centre there. Then got our vehicle stuck in a skidoo trail trying to leave town. Had to sleep in the car overnight! Haha.

But also, I mean, getting to play the Comedy Nest here on a regular basis is super cool, too. As a small-town kid who didn’t grow up with comedy clubs nearby, it’s a neat little reminder of how far I’ve come.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

I have a bit about grocery stores and the hierarchy of the different stores. That one will always have a special place for me because it was the first one I watched connect with everyone. The grey hairs, the young adults and everyone in between. First bit that made me think “wait, I can do this.”

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

My favourite way is live at the venues. But between those, a lot of them come through on IG Reels.

Tell us a joke about your city.

Montréal is the super hot girl everyone wants to be with, then you realize she’s crazy and will pop your tires and leave you stranded on the 40.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

Comedy Cave MTL. We produce shows all over the city every week, from the South to the North Shore, West Island to the Plateau. Odds are we’re in your neighbourhood, so come on out!

Where can we follow you?

Instagram is where most of the magic happens. I’m too old to be 87 different apps lol.

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

On the English side, Arthur Sims Jr is killer.

En français, Victor Billo is phénoménal.

Big fan of both those guys.
