Tragedy Plus Time: Montréal Comedy Duo She/They

Built on a shared sense of play and the kind of chemistry you can’t fake, She/They’s comedy feels loose, slightly unhinged, and immediately familiar. The duo, made up of Bronwyn Farkas and Sophie Jean, lean into absurdity while staying anchored in character work and stories that land because they’re recognizably human. Their shows are designed to feel like an inside joke you’re suddenly in on, a tone they’ve honed through live performance and a deep love of the form. With an upcoming appearance at the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival this March, we spoke with She/They about their influences, creative process, and what keeps their partnership grounded in that original, camp-born energy.

Comedy Duo She/They

How would you describe your comedy style?

Somewhat absurd and chaotic, but always grounded in memorable characters and relatable stories. We like our shows to feel like an inside joke with the audience.

Who are some of your influences?

We admire double acts that are greater than the sum of their parts; Ilana & Abbi, Key & Peele, Kylie & Timothée.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

Honestly? Ellen.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Mel Robbins.

What is your pre-show ritual?

We met at summer camp – our friendship and comedy is based in that childlike energy. The stakes are as low as when performing in a sticky dining hall with a hand painted banner; “It’s Coco House,” we remind ourselves.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

Théâtre Sainte-Catherine! We really found our footing there. The space, the vibe, the people. If you’re an emerging comedian, a veteran wanting to try out new material, or just looking for a fun night out, it’s a guaranteed good time.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

We have a sketch about the rhetoric surrounding queerness that parodies common misconceptions. We wanted to write something funny that didn’t feel like you were being taught a lesson, but instead invited the audience to laugh at themselves and with each other. We’re proud that it’s become a fan favourite.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Live comedy for the win.

Tell us a joke about your city.

I would, but it doesn’t translate.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

We are performing in the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival! March 6th and 7th at Comedy Bar Bloor.

Where can we follow you?

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

Pat Gourdeau is one of our favourites. If you get a chance to see him, do.
