Tragedy Plus Time: Montréal-based Comedian Rachid Badouri

Rachid Badouri is a Montréal-based comedian whose observational, deeply human style has earned him a reputation for comedy that laughs with people rather than at them. Influenced by storytellers who prioritize rhythm and humanity over shock value—Eddie Murphy’s commanding energy as a kid, Dave Chappelle’s courageous use of silence now—Badouri mines everyday moments and cultural observations that transcend background, blending self-deprecation with sharp social commentary.

How would you describe your comedy style?

Observational, honest, and human. I come from a place of curiosity… I like comedy that laughs with people. My style mixes self-deprecation, cultural and social observations and everyday moments that everyone recognizes, even if we come from different backgrounds!

Who are some of your influences?

Comedians who tell the truth! People who can be sharp and generous. I’m inspired by storytellers who understand rhythm, timing, and humanity more than shock value.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

Eddie Murphy. His confidence, energy, and ability to command a room were unforgettable to me as a kid.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Dave Chappelle. Not because everyone says his name, but because of his courage to slow down, to think on stage, and to trust silence as much as punchlines.

What is your pre-show ritual?

I used to get nervous and try to self-center. Now I actually love having my loved ones around me right up until about two minutes before the show. Then I isolate backstage, do a bit of shadow boxing to get the energy up, and I pray, asking to speak in a way that might help at least one soul in need that night… God, I sound like a conceited prick🤦🏻‍♂️… but I swear I really do ask for that.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

Montreal will always have a special place in my heart. It’s home, it’s demanding, and it doesn’t let you fake anything. If you win Montreal, you earn it!

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

One of the hardest bits I ever wrote was about calling off a wedding just three days before the date. At the time, I was emotionally manipulated and caught up in a cult that has this strong hold on me! And I was convinced to walk away from the person I was supposed to marry. I stayed silent about it for years. What finally pushed me to talk about it was a conversation with my friend, comedian Ronny Chieng, who basically said, “How are you sitting on a story like that and not talking about it?” He reminded me that comedy can transform pain into something meaningful and even funny! What makes that bit special is that it’s deeply personal, completely unique, and it ends with hope: I eventually left that cult and married the amazing woman who is now my wife. People connect to the honesty, the madness of the story, and the fact that it leads somewhere good.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Live shows, always. Online clips are great, but nothing replaces seeing a comedian hold a room in real time.

Tell us a joke about your city.

Montreal is futuristically multicultural… I once bought a Halal taco from a Chinese man, who only spoke Spanish!

Do you have anything to promote right now?

I’m currently touring: Montreal – Laval – Vancouver – Ottawa (Date coming soon) – Switzerland (Date coming soon) … check for updates here!
