Five Minutes With: Montréal-based Musician Avery Jane

Avery Jane is a Montreal-based artist from Victoria BC, a self-described “Folk-inspired Pop R&B” singer-songwriter. After years of performing in big bands, theatre, folk and indie-jazz bands, she began to pursue her solo career. In 2019, Avery began performing on the pub circuit in Montreal as a solo act, honing her skills and writing music. During the pandemic, her work changed drastically from performance-focused to creating original music. She released her first single, “April” in 2020, her debut acoustic EP “Honey Lemon Ginger” in 2022, and her first full production EP “Hey You” in 2023. Most recently, she released “Bakery” a soulful pop R&B track.

Avery’s lyrics are genuine and clever. With songs about forgetting to buy toothpaste at the grocery store, giving her mother a room to visit in the big city, and unconditional love, Avery’s insightful, relatable lyrics touch on many aspects of the human experience. She is spending the 2025 year working on new music and making genuine connections in the musical community.

A bit complicated… Avery Jane is my real name and I’ve been singing and making music my whole life. I released my first project in 2020 but my “brand as an artist” really started to pop off in 2022.

Favourite musician growing up:

Such a hard question. My parents are both artists and we listened to basically everything. I’d say possibly Sarah Harmer, Ella Fitzgerald or maybe even Jenn Grant. But if I’m being cheesy yet honest I’d say my father Ryan Rock.

Favourite musician now:

At the moment I’m really in an Olivia Dean and Doechii phase, but I’d say my “fave” changes monthly or even weekly.

Guilty pleasure song:

I don’t really feel too guilty about songs I listen to, as I think they all have their place, but maybe “Best I Ever Had” by Drake. I don’t bump that one out in the open.

Live show ritual:

I’m not sure I have a true routine yet. I find pre-show moments often go unplanned so I adapt to the situation to make sure everything goes well. I think the one thing I like to do is get to the venue with enough time to get comfortable in the space, outside of soundcheck, I warm up and usually take a moment.

Favourite local musician:

Montreal has almost too many incredible local musicians, it’s so hard to choose one. But Yzabo is definitely not one to miss. She’s phenomenal!

EP or LP?

To listen to in its entirety? Both, if they’re well done, though I do think a well-done EP makes me want a full LP, but a full LP feels more satiating.

Early bird or night owl?

Both haha! I’m quite middle of the road. In bed by 12 usually, and up by 8 or 9.

Road or studio?

I definitely prefer live performances to studio recording as I love sharing moments with my band and the audience, what a specific and beautiful feeling. I find studio performance is much more taxing personally, but I enjoy the challenge and love the results.

Any shows or albums coming up?

I just released a new song, called “Bakery”! I am so incredibly proud of it. I also have a show in Toronto at It’s OK Studios* on Valentine’s Day!

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

There is a special place in my heart for Coco Rico on St. Laurent. I guess I just love a good rotisserie chicken.

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

I like Laval in the Plateau. It’s one of the first streets I walked down in the Plateau when I moved here, it was the end of spring, flowers and trees everywhere, and I ended up in Square St. Louis with a small group of jazz musicians playing and I just fell in love with the energy of the city. It’s also one of my Mom’s favourite streets here, and I love taking walks with her there.

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

Mont-Royal/Jeanne Mance for sure. I love walking there with my dogs. We are so lucky to have an urban park of that magnitude, and the conservation efforts that are happening more and more have me very excited for the flora and fauna. Plus the community gathering space that Jeanne Mance provides is really cool. Music, dancing, sports and just partying all happening next to the mountain, it’s totally unique to Montreal.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

It depends on what for!! There are so many smaller local venues that strive to provide affordable and accessible shows like Turbo Haus, Petit Campus and Bar le Ritz, and we really need those to keep uplifting newer musicians, but I have a very special place in my heart for MTelus (Metropolis), it’s the first venue I attended when I moved to the city and really sparked this desire for me to pursue music. There’s something really magical about seeing a full production in action.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

Probably Steve’s across from MTelus. I bought a guitar there in 2019 and we joked that someday my name would be on the MTelus screen across the street. I said I’d invite all of that store’s employees and it all felt very special and motivating.
