“So much of the process is unconscious, spontaneous,” explains Montreal artist Donna Casa, of her vibrant and evocative watercolours and collages. “I never know how and when a work is going to finish. She remembers exactly how the process started: “I was working at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and the art therapist, Lucille Proulx, organized a team-building day for our infant clinical group. The experience was absolutely inspiring. I thought I could really like this!”
Donna Casa, retired from a long career as a child psychotherapist, has been painting for some 30 years. Her paintings have been featured in exhibitions across Montreal. “Painting enriches my inner life. It’s such a passionate exercise and a good way to learn about yourself. The process can be painful, but sometimes a piece just comes together with ease.”
Donna Casa, born in Medford, Mass., is deeply rooted in Québec and has created some of her best works inspired by trips to the Magdalen Islands, Charlevoix, and the Eastern Townships. Lately she has been creating collages from her own paintings. “Last summer, I spent some time on Georgian Bay with my husband François and the children. I was fascinated yet intimidated by the waterlilies. Sometimes, you just have to let things happen. I set myself up, mixed up my colours on the spot, and just went for it. It doesn’t always work, but I was really pleased with the result!

Which ’hood are you in?
I have lived in Old Saint-Lambert, Quebec, for the past 46 years. It is a great place to live with lots of biking paths and hiking trails nearby. There are excellent bakeries and very good restaurants. The commute to Montreal is easy by train or the metro. The village mentality is warm and lively.
What do you do?
I am currently training to be a guide at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. I plan to complete the second year of training in September. The combination of guiding and research at the museum, along with being an active artis,t is very rewarding and beneficial to both activities.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently working with collage, landscapes, and playing with abstraction. Recently, I had fun exploring botanical printing using ferns and leaves from my garden.
Where can we find your work?
