“A Day in the Life” with: Montréal Visual Artist Hanna Barczyk

Hanna Barczyk’s life is infused with art. I often hear her speak about a book she is reading, a film that struck her, or her observations of life. She has a way of finding humour in her commentary and reflections on relationships, bringing to life deeper meanings of the human condition. Attuned to the emotions that flow between people, her world is one of movement and reflection. Hanna transforms her surroundings and insights into stories. What sets her apart is her ability to fuse these ideas with drawing and painting, uncovering deep memories and a sense of collective conscience. Her interest in the emotional world leads her to explore the intricacies of relationships, often with humour, while shaping her own life theories. Her work carries a playful spirit, yet it is always grounded with sensitivity and courage.

Hanna’s studio is a step directly into her world, like a laboratory of ideas. The space is alive with energy, filled with sketches, playful experimentation, and a mix of finished and unfinished pieces. I’ll see a series of ink drawings, and over time, watch as she translates a selection into paintings. Her process is one of continuous exploration, transformation, and evolution.

Which ’hood are you in?

I’m in the Plateau. I love it here, my studio is just three minutes away at the LivArts building, which is one of the most charming spaces I’ve ever rented.

What do you do?

I’m an illustrator and visual artist. I work across many areas, from book covers to advertising, murals, and projects with educational and cultural institutions, including posters for the Vancouver Opera. My main goal is to portray empathy through strong concepts. I’ve always felt that emotion and intellect together create character and personality and I hope my work always carries intent and meaning. Art isn’t just something I do; it’s at the center of my life.

What are you currently working on?

I’m excited to share that I’ve been preparing for a solo show in Toronto, opening October 2 at ISZA Gallery, 95 King Street East. In my personal work, I’m continuing to expand my visual narratives and always exploring new approaches to painting.

Where can we find your work?

In Montreal, you can see my permanent public art piece at Royalmount. I also have a children’s book (Roots & Wings: How Shahzia Sikander Became an Artist) in the museum store at The MoMA in New York City, on numerous book and magazine covers, and of course, my upcoming solo show in Toronto. You can also find me online; I frequently update my Instagram and website.
