Charitable Choices: Vanessa Dubois of The Shoebox Project

In a recent interview, Vanessa Dubois from The Shoebox Project shared insights on how individuals and organizations can get involved in their initiative, which aims to support women in need. She discussed the simplicity of preparing a shoebox filled with essential items and gifts, and how schools, companies, and community groups can host fundraising drives to support the cause.

The Shoebox Project

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.

The Shoebox Project is a non-profit Canadian charity with chapters all across Canada, with our chapter assisting over 50 local organizations throughout the island of Montreal.

What problem does it aim to solve?

The mission of The Shoebox Project is to uplift and empower women & gender-diverse individuals who are affected by poverty and homelessness. This is accomplished through in-kind support, education and community participation through Shoebox drives. We collect and assemble gift-wrapped shoeboxes which contain everyday essentials like soap, shampoo, socks and toothpaste, as well as small luxuries like makeup and gift cards. Each shoebox includes a handwritten message of solidarity, which makes the recipient feel worthy and special.

When did you start/join it?

I began volunteering with the charity in February of this year after I felt motivated to become more involved & give back to my community.

What made you want to get involved?

Volunteering is very fulfilling, and it’s evident that small gestures have a lasting impact!

What more needs to be done?

We rely solely on the gracious support of public & private donors-whether it is from a concerned individual or a compassionate corporation, everyone is welcome to give! If you would like to make a monetary donation to our Montreal chapter, you can donate here.

How can our readers help?

The kindness of Montrealers is boundless, and any form of support we can generate is greatly appreciated! To prepare your own shoebox, or to start a fundraising drive at your company or school, you can visit our website for further information.

Do you have any events coming up?

The Montreal chapter of The Shoebox Project will be participating in 2 events during the month of August, should you wish to show your support in person. On Friday, August 9th we will be participating in the Community Day of Fierté Montreal 2024, from 11 AM-6 PM. On Saturday, August 17th, we will be participating in the “Journée du Village” in Pointe-Claire, where we will have a booth in front of Le Panier (274 Lakeshore) from 11 AM-7 PM.

Where can we follow you?

You can follow us on Instagram or on Facebook to stay updated.

PAY IT FORWARD: What is an awesome local charity that you love?

Presently, we have collaborated with the wonderful Montreal company of Royal Blush Apparel to sell a fundraising t-shirt to collect funds for the Montreal chapter of The Shoebox Project.
