Charitable Choices: Lauren Tracey of the United Irish Societies of Montreal

Lauren Tracey stands as a passionate guardian of Irish heritage as the Vice President of Advertising & Public Relations for the United Irish Societies (UIS). With a legacy stretching back to 1928, the organization is preparing to celebrate an extraordinary milestone—the 200th edition of the Montreal St. Patrick’s Parade—while embodying a powerful mission of community, multiculturalism, and celebration. Tracey, who first became involved after being selected as a parade princess in 2018, now leads an all-volunteer organization that does more than just organize a parade; it brings Montrealers together, promotes cultural understanding, and supports the community through initiatives like their annual Christmas Baskets campaign.

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.

The UIS is a non-profit organization that has been in existence since 1928. We are made up of ONLY volunteers. Our main goal is to organize the annual Montreal St. Patrick’s Parade – we are currently planning the 200th edition of the event! We also organize other charitable events throughout the year, such as our annual Christmas Baskets campaign. Ultimately, our aim is to promote and celebrate Irish culture with all Montrealers.

What problem does it aim to solve?

We do not necessarily aim to solve a specific problem. However, our parade aims to promote multiculturalism and celebrate our culture along with many others in and around Montreal. Everyone is welcome to participate in and/or attend our parade, and we are so proud of the fact that we bring Montreal together in a positive and exciting way every year!

When did you start/join it?

I was selected as a Princess of the 2018 St. Patrick’s Parade of Montreal following a public speaking competition. It was after that experience that I became involved in the organization. I held the position of Communications Chairperson and then was elected to the executive board as VP Public Relations 3 years ago. Being a part of the UIS has become a bit of a family affair in my family, and it is so amazing to be a part of this organization with them.

What made you want to get involved?

The COMMUNITY. The Irish community of Montreal is probably the most welcoming and supportive group of people you could imagine. It’s hard not to want to get involved!

What was the situation like when you started?

The organization in 2018 was much like it is now – run by an incredible group of people and supported by an amazing community.

How has it changed since?

The COVID-19 pandemic obviously changed a lot in the last few years; we have had to adjust and adapt in many ways. The option of using Zoom for meetings and get-togethers has helped when needed. One thing that we have definitely noticed is a more pressing need for help from the community. For example, we have noticed an increase in the number of Christmas Baskets we distribute over the holidays. We have done our best to adapt with the changing society and help in whatever way we can.

What more needs to be done?

Involve the youth of Montreal! Get involved! So many people in Quebec have Irish ancestry, and we are always looking for people to get involved, participate in our annual parade, and attend our events.

How can our readers help?

Do you have any events coming up?

The 200TH EDITION OF THE ST. PATRICK’S PARADE OF MONTREAL is taking place on March 16th, 2025. Come join us – we hope this year’s edition will be bigger and better than ever!

PAY IT FORWARD: What is an awesome local charity that you love?

We have recently implemented a new tradition within our organization: each year, the individual selected as the Grand Marshal of the parade chooses a local charity of their choice that is close to their heart. Our annual Breakfast with Paddy, a family-fun event featuring our parade mascot Paddy (see images attached), takes place in the weeks before the parade. Proceeds of the event go to the selected charity. This year, our 2025 Grand Marshal Danny Doyle Sr has chosen the Alzheimer’s Society of Montreal. Thank you, Danny!
