Celine Huys treats the stage like she’s just catching up with friends, no filter, no performance, just whatever’s actually going on with her. A lot of that material comes from her mom, who’s shaped her sense of humour in ways that are equal parts loving and messy. She’s got a thing for rowdy crowds too, a wild New York show stands out as one of her favourites, and she’s known to mess with other comics backstage before going on, just for fun.

How would you describe your comedy style?
Like you’re just hanging with your friends and not feeling any shame about your stories.
Who are some of your influences?
Bill Clinton, OJ Simpson, Antoine Dodson and Louis CK. Currently a huge Dustin Poirier fan.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
My mother.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Doug Stanhope.
What is your pre-show ritual?
I like to trick people before shows by asking other comedians if they do comedy.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
New York for sure, because I love when homeless guys come in and heckle me and crowds genuinely come to watch comedy.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
I love talking about my mother, she’s been my biggest influence, both positively and negatively. Joking about her has brought both shame and peace into the family.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
To be honest, I rarely watch comedy unless it’s other comics I’m performing with. I find it a media overload. I do love just watching people on the streets, though.
Tell us a joke about your city.
That we have great healthcare and roads, and that it isn’t mob-run.
Do you have anything to promote right now?
Follow me on IG so that I don’t ever have to sell my body for money. All of my upcoming shows are there.
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
I’d like to promote Miguel McKenna; he’s such an insanely funny comic, and his character Luvaboi needs more attention.
