Five Minutes With: Metal Band Ashbreather

In some form or another, the three members of Ashbreather have been playing together for over 15 years, whether it was attempting Beck and Rage Against the Machine covers in our parents’ basements, getting roped into a dysfunctional high school Viking Death Metal band, or a slightly less dysfunctional Opeth cover band. Eventually, we whittled it down to just the three of us and started vomiting out more personal imaginings, writing dirty, sludge-tinged prog songs about such timeless topics as intergalactic space travel, disgusting mutant bugs, and eating too many baked beans. That’s Ashbreather in a nutshell, full of beans.

Favourite musician growing up:

Between the three of us collectively, probably no band influenced our initial sound and musical interests quite like Mastodon.

Favourite musician now:

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, if only because their self-reliant ethos and prolific output is exactly what we as a band aspire to (we also all love their music, of course).

Guilty pleasure song:

B44 – Get Down, though we refuse to feel any actual guilt over enjoying this beautiful and positive song.

Live show ritual:

Collective petting of the studio cat (his name is Chappie)

Favourite local musician:

Yoo Do Right

EP or LP?

Time is an illusion; if it’s good, it’s good!

Early bird or night owl?

We all have day jobs, so we’re all night owls by necessity. It’s the only way we can find the countless hours needed to jam and/or play Super Monkey Ball.

Road or studio?

We literally live in our homemade studio, so I think we’ve got to give it to studio. Not that we don’t love being out on the road too (but not too much, or we start to miss our cat).

Any shows or albums coming up?

We’ve got a few shows happening this summer in various places:

Friday July 17th – Barfly, Montreal with Washout (MTL), Cope Land (MTL). girlboything (OT)

Friday July 24th – La Taverne Royal, Trois-Rivières with Scorbut (QC), Slammed Into Ruins (MTL)

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

Le Vieux Dorval (which we sometimes find ourselves living off of).

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

Either Mackay Street downtown, because our guitarist’s name is Mackay (Mackay did not write this), St Charles in Kirkland because our Bassist is named Charles (Charles did not write this), or Rue Colin in Pierrefonds because our drummer’s name is Colin (Colin wrote this).

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

Ovide Park in Pointe-Claire, because it’s right next to our band house and we once destroyed a Google Home device with a baseball bat in the field there. Good times…

Also, they shine the ice rink’s lights directly into my eyes while I’m trying to sleep, which is pretty cool, thanks guys.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

Gotta be Thrash Can, it’s got a vibe like nowhere else we’ve ever played. The crowd is always hype and generally down for just about anything, even our miserable, distorted fart music.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

My friend Don’s house, he has a lot of gear and he sells some of it to me for very cheap (or just gives it away, thanks Don!).
