Tragedy Plus Time: Comedian Wassim El-Mounzer

A staple of Montreal’s comedy scene, Wassim El-Mounzer has built a reputation for a style that defies easy categorization, effortlessly balancing sincerity with absurdity in a way that keeps audiences guessing. A 2022 Just For Laughs New Faces: Canada selection, Wassim continues to carve out his own lane in stand-up, embracing the unexpected while earning recognition as one of the city’s most distinctive comedic voices. Featured on The Debater’s and the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, his debut album ‘You can English’, produced by Comedy Records, is now available on all streaming platforms.

How would you describe your comedy style?

My style is impetuous. My defence is impregnable. And I’m just ferocious. I want your heart.

Who are some of your influences?

I am beyond influence. My creation is pulled straight from The Source (magazine).

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

I hated comedy growing up.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

I hate comedy even more now.

What is your pre-show ritual?

I kiss my Kill Tony® poster twice, then I stare ponderously into the mirror for what feels like hours, pull out my phone, take a deep breath, and cancel at the last minute.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

It would have to be the gig I did in the woods behind Casa Grecque. The audience was tough, and mostly comprised of birds. I got chirped hard, minutes in.

One bird yells out, “nice wings, idiot!”

“That’s so raven,” I quickly quipped back, wittily.

They gave me a standing V formation.

What is your favourite bit you have written, and why were you proud of it?

I don’t do ‘bits’ per se. I am either furiously humping the stool, or sitting on it and aggressively asking the couple in the front row how they met. Pride is for cowards.

What is your favourite medium for finding new comedians?

Theresa Caputo

Tell us a joke about your city.

Rule number one of comedy: never tell a joke for free. This should only be a purely for-profit endeavour, and anyone who tells you otherwise is PROBABLY FROM THE EAST END OF MONTREAL LOL.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

Wendy’s Bacon Portabella Mushroom Melt is back! #melton

Where can we follow you?

I think I’ve reached the max number of followers, but here try Instagram

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comedian we should know about?

Jim Carrey
