Five Minutes With: Montréal RnB Musician Queenie

With experience in musical theatre at the New World School of the Arts in Miami and with also a talent for dance she studied various styles such as ballet jazz, contemporary dance and tap. QUEENIE’s unique and soulful voice landed her many lead roles in musicals such as Deena in Dreamgirls, Glenda in The Wiz and the role of Patsy in The Rimers of Eldritch and shows like Ragtime and Aida. Growing up in Miami, QUEENIE was deeply influenced by American pop, soul and R&B music as we can tell by her vocal style, but she also has a musical repertoire much broader which extends from gospel to jazz and to hip-hop.

After graduating from high school in Miami, QUEENIE returns to MontrÉal where she joins the gospel choir Uni-T. She quickly became one of the main soloists and met Marc Dupré who hired her for one of his concerts. Influenced by this formative experience, she began composing music and writing lyrics. Her song Blood Water won the Best New Artist Award at the 2018 Heart of Gold Gala in Montreal. It is also this song that she used for her audition at Star Académie and that helped her go straight to live broadcasts and eventually become one of the official candidates of the 2021 edition.

Determined to bring her voice and musical vision to the world, QUEENIE has been working hard preparing her first album release scheduled for the fall of 2024 on the record label Disques Juliette.

Favourite musician growing up:

Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston. These three were the Trinity of vocal divas in my house growing up. They are the reason I love music.

Favourite musician now:

Beyoncé. From Destiny’s child to the solo artist she is now. Beyoncé has been a very big influence on me as a performer and a vocal artist. But what I like about her is that she is not afraid to step out of the box to create music with a new sound.

Guilty pleasure song:

“Pokemon Theme Song”…. This song was my childhood! Back in the day, Animé was popular with shows like Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, etc. I could sing this theme song DOWN you hear me! It was my thing and I KNOW I am not the only one!

Live show ritual:

I like to pray. I give thanks to God for where I am and what I’m doing. It is an absolute blessing to wake up and do what I love every day and with people who are just as passionate.

Favourite local musician:

There will never ever be another Celine Dion. She loves music with such a generous mentality and heart. I have never met her but I hope one day I can just say thank you for being the example we all aspire to be.

EP or LP?

I say BOTH

Early bird or night owl?

Night owl

Road or studio?

Road or studio? Both …I love performing and connecting with fans. But there is something therapeutic when in the studio.
