Five Minutes With: Montréal Trio Total Fucking Darkness

Total Fucking Darkness (TFD) is a Montreal-based electronic pop trio composed of Torquil Campbell of Stars, Stephen Ramsay of Young Galaxy, and UK producer Tom McFall. Formed out of a long-standing friendship and mutual love for late ’80s and early ’90s house music, TFD blends plastic pop aesthetics with sharp, irreverent lyricism. Their sound combines lush electronic textures with dancefloor-ready beats, exploring themes of existential angst, class struggle, and the absurdity of modern life. With a commitment to raw creativity and sonic experimentation, TFD aims to dissolve the barrier between artist and audience, offering music that is both provocative and unapologetically fun.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

Pichai

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

Van Horne, because the shops and storefronts are so weird. Literally no appeal whatsoever. Nothing makes sense there. It also connects my home to my studio.

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

So many good parks here – Maisonneuve is great for rambling, Mont-Royal too. Outremont for a picnic. Jarry is classic. The underpass skate park on St Laurent…

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

Olympia was great – is it gone now? Support the small venues, like Bar Le Ritz, Sala Rossa, etc. They are being systematically shut down thanks to gentrification.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

Gimme Phonopolis for carrying smaller local acts, being run by musicians, and having good taste.
