Five Minutes With: Montréal Singer-Songwriter Larker

Larker is the musical alias of a Montreal-born songwriter whose name balances playfulness and depth — a nod both to the lark, a songbird, and the lightheartedness of a “lark,” or joke. While the name suggests whimsy, the music itself is strikingly earnest. Larker’s slightly experimental take on alternative rock blends impassioned vocals, adventurous chord progressions, and shifting time signatures, all grounded in melodies that feel instantly familiar yet distinctly his own.

Music has been a constant since childhood — from drumming on ice cream tubs with pencils at age five to picking out songs by ear on his aunt’s basement keyboard. When she passed away, leaving behind her guitar, ten-year-old Larker began lessons and quickly started writing songs, turning music into both refuge and compass.

By fourteen, he had become the default leader of his first band simply because he was the one writing. In the years that followed, he fronted projects like Confusion In Stereo, Speakerton, Stepper Rhodes, and Dukes of Burgundy, performing at Montreal landmarks including Métropolis, Le Spectrum, and Foufounes Électriques. A whirlwind relationship and early fatherhood later pulled his focus toward family life, but the songs never stopped coming.

His upcoming debut album, Romanticide (out October 17, 2025 on Finicky Records), is a self-produced collection written across twelve years of that intense, on-and-off relationship — a raw, searching record about love, loss, survival, and redemption.

Favourite musician growing up:

Oof. That’s gotta be a tie between John Lennon and Thom Yorke. I can’t put one above the other. Both of them are really tortured and having trouble fitting into the chaotic world around them. They seemed to have a direct connection to the source for a brief period. Great role models for making music. As far as enjoying life, yeah maybe not the best people to model yourself after.

Favourite musician now:

Rodrigo Amarante. His latest album, Drama, is pure magic. He’s one of the few people who can make deep spiritual music without it being preachy or corny. He seems to be a guy who somewhat has life figured out.

Guilty pleasure song:

Lights by Ellie Goulding. It’s fun to sing along to in the car.

Live show ritual:

Pretty boring. Vocal warmups, guitar warmups. Don’t yell or drink too much.

Favourite local musician:

I love The Dears, Thanya Iyer’s new album is great, Nanimal is pretty cool too.

EP or LP?

LP any day. I love discovering a whole world.

Early bird or night owl?

I’m an aspiring early bird, but for now I’m still a night owl.

Road or studio?

Studio.

Any shows or albums coming up?

My first album, Romanticide, is out via Finicky Records on October 17th. I’m proud of this album. I think it’s the kind of thing you can put on and not have to skip any tracks, so I hope the right people find it and connect with me in the ether.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

Bistro Entre Ciel et Terre

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

Wellington in Verdun has become a really great place to hang out. It’s a pedestrian walkway in the summer months. Yoni Falafel is addictive. They have a good mix of restaurants now and some eclectic food markets. It’s just a good hang.

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

Angrignon Park. Beautiful taste of nature in the city, and it has a great dog park.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

Les Foufounes Électriques. That stage is really tall and hollow, so the kick drum creates this crazy resonance that shoots through your whole body. It’s great.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

Les Bons Débarras. 2nd-hand vinyl/book store. Good finds there.
