Five Minutes With: Montréal Band The Fake Friends

Montreal’s The Fake Friends kick off the rollout for their debut LP Let’s Not Overthink This with “A Sucker Born Every Minute,” out December 11 via Stomp Records. The single delivers a sharp, hook-forward blast of post-punk and dance-punk energy, landing somewhere between Parquet Courts, Culture Abuse, and early-2000s alt-rock. Built for both the dance floor and solitary listens, it balances nervous momentum with emotional clarity.

Formed within Montreal’s tightly woven punk and indie scene, the six-piece pulls from a wide range of influences, from hardcore to power pop. Frontman Matthew Savage leads alongside guitarists Felix Crawford-Legault and Luca Santilli, bassist Michael Kamps, keyboardist Bradley Cooper-Graham, and drummer Michael Tomizzi. That breadth shows in a sound that’s melodic, jagged, and always in motion.

“A Sucker Born Every Minute” captures the band at their most focused: taut guitars, a restless rhythm section, and lyrics that wrestle with self-awareness, burned bridges, and late-night decisions. The track offers an early glimpse of Let’s Not Overthink This, recorded across Montreal studios with producer Jordan Barillaro, expanding the band’s sound with bigger arrangements and a stronger danceable pulse.

With a reputation built through relentless touring and high-profile support slots, The Fake Friends are stepping confidently into their next chapter. “A Sucker Born Every Minute” sets the tone — sharp, melodic, and unmistakably their own.
