Tragedy Plus Time: Comedian Amer Rez

Amer Rez mines his daily life for humour, drawing influence from Louis C.K., Sugar Sammy, Steve Martin, and old Egyptian comedy movies, though his all-time favourite comedian remains his uncle Jamil—someone who never got on stage but was the funniest human being he ever met. His favourite venue is the one he hosts: The Good Night Comedy Show every Tuesday at the M Montreal Hostel, where the mix of Montrealers and international hostel guests creates unpredictable, interesting nights.

How would you describe your comedy style?

I talk a lot about what’s going on in my life and try to find humour in it.

Who are some of your influences?

Louis C.K., Sugar Sammy, Steve Martin and old Egyptian comedy movies.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

My uncle Jamil. He never got on stage, but he was the funniest human being I ever met.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Louis CK.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Some neck stretches, going over my material, looking at the crowd, and reminding myself that everything is going to be okay. Add a ginger ale, diet pepsi and some B12, and we’re ready to rock’n’roll.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

The Good Night Comedy Show every Tuesday at the M Montreal Hostel, which I host. It’s always a fun time because the audience is a mix of Montrealers and people staying at the hostel from all over the world. It’s always a fun and interesting night. Tickets here.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

My favourite joke is always the last joke I wrote. Nothing brings me more excitement than writing a new joke (and using it to pay my rent!)

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Seeing live comedy is the best way to discover comedians. Go see a live show!

Tell us a joke about your city.

I remember when my dad told me we were immigrating to Montreal, an island. You can’t tell a child he’s going to live on an island and expect him to imagine Boulevard Décarie. That’s child abuse.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

My podcast: The Good Night Podcast

My weekly show: The Good Night Comedy Show every Tuesday at the M Montreal Hotel.

My monthly Friday show at the Club Atwater: Comedy Night at Club Atwater.

I’m also touring across Canada, so make sure to follow me and come check me out.

Where can we follow you?

Instagram

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

Some of the best comedians and humans in the city that I tour with: Joel Slavik, Joanna Selvarajah, and Will Del Vecchio.
