“A Day in the Life” with: Montréal Artist Charlotte Ghomeshi

As a collaborator, friend, and fellow member of my MFA cohort, I have had the privilege of witnessing the evolve of Charlotte Ghomeshi. Her practice resonates with me, not only for its aesthetic sensibility but for the way it navigates personal and collective memory with quiet intensity.

I first encountered her work when I Lay My Wing as a Bridge to You was shown at Eli Kerr. In this piece, she explored the togetherness of family and the connective power of music. What struck me then, and continues to draw me to her work, is how she makes space for vulnerability and reflection. She doesn’t just document experiences, she creates environments where memory and emotion feel tangible.

Through photography and video, Charlotte works in layers, drawing from her everyday surroundings to build narratives that feel both specific and open-ended. She often lingers on small moments and gestures, allowing them to hold weight. Lately, her work has become more focused on identity, shaped by her Québécois, Iranian, and Italian heritage. What I find compelling is how she treats identity as fluid rather than fixed, allowing contradictions to exist rather than trying to resolve them.

Charlotte’s work asks for patience. It doesn’t tell you how to feel but gives you time to sit with what emerges. It reminds me that storytelling is as much about what is left unsaid as what is made visible.

Which neighbourhood are you in?

I’ve been living in Villeray for almost three years now, in a triplex shared with friends—a community I deeply cherish.

What do you do?

I’m currently pursuing my MFA in photography at Concordia while also working extensively with video. I also manage Projet Tabloïde, an urban art initiative focused on making visual arts more accessible and democratic. Though the project is currently on pause, you can still see new photographic works appearing from time to time.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on two projects simultaneously. The first is a photography series that I hope will one day become a photobook, exploring the experience of caring for someone with a serious illness and the emotional weight of being a caregiver. In parallel, I’m developing a three-channel video installation centred on my grandfather, who battled cancer, and how his Persian roots shaped his perception of death.

Where can we find your work?

On my website, you’ll find a mix of projects I’ve exhibited alongside various commissioned works, including photoshoots and music videos. You can also explore more of my work on Instagram.
